Job Description:

The Department of Mathematics & Sciences at Our Lady of the Lake University seeks a full-time, Title V Grant funded, Academic Advisor for our main campus in San Antonio, TX to begin in August 2024. We are seeking an Athletic Academic Advisor to provide personalized guidance and support to student-athletes, helping them navigate the intersection of academic and athletic pursuits to achieve their educational and career goals.

Essential Functions:
This position will facilitate student-athlete academic achievement, retention, and graduation. Development and evaluation of athletic academic assistance programs and project student-athletes' progress towards degrees will be a vital part of this position.
We are seeking an energetic and collaborative individual to join our team to complement and strengthen existing expertise and experience. Specific duties of the position include:

• Assist student-athletes in selecting appropriate courses to fulfill degree requirements while considering their athletic schedules.
• Monitor academic progress and provide guidance on course load balancing and academic planning.
• Offer career exploration services tailored to the unique needs and interests of student-athletes.
• Provide resources for internships, job shadowing, and networking opportunities within and beyond athletics.
• Teach time management techniques to help student-athletes effectively balance their athletic commitments with academic responsibilities.
• Offer study skills workshops and resources to enhance academic performance.
• Foster a sense of community among student-athletes through workshops, team-building activities, and peer mentoring programs.
• Collaborate with campus organizations and community partners to promote academic success and holistic development among student-athletes.

Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge:

• Familiarity with academic advising principles and best practices, particularly in the context of supporting student-athletes.
• Knowledge of career development resources and strategies tailored to student-athletes' unique needs and interests.
• Awareness of learning disabilities, mental health issues, and other factors that may impact student-athletes' academic performance and well-being.
• Familiarity with campus resources and support services available to student-athletes, including tutoring centers, disability services, and mental health counseling.

Skills:

• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to effectively interact with student-athletes, coaches, faculty, and administrators.
• Strong interpersonal skills for building rapport and fostering trust with student-athletes from diverse backgrounds.
• Problem-solving skills to address academic, athletic, and personal challenges faced by student-athletes.
• Time management and organizational skills to manage multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks effectively.
• Ability to collaborate with colleagues across departments and disciplines to provide comprehensive support to student-athletes.

Abilities:

• Empathy and sensitivity to the unique experiences and pressures faced by student-athletes, including balancing academic and athletic commitments.
• Adaptability to respond to changing circumstances and evolving needs of student-athletes throughout their academic and athletic careers.
• Capacity to maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards while supporting student-athletes with sensitive issues.
• Leadership abilities to advocate for student-athletes' interests and promote a culture of academic success and well-being within the athletic department and broader campus community.
• Commitment to professional development and staying abreast of current trends and research in student-athlete support services.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Education, Counseling, or related field
• Experience of academic advising of higher education students

Preferred Qualifications

• Earned Master's degree from an accredited institution in Education, Counseling, or related field
• Experience of academic advising of athletes in higher education
• Experience working with NAIA eligibility, rules and regulations
• Experience working with support services and special programs
  

Additional Information:

Minimum Starting Salary: $39,782-$44,203
