Position Summary:

The intercollegiate athletics program is an integral part of the university striving to achieve the same standards excellence in athletics that exist within academic programs. The program is concerned with the physical and mental welfare of he student and strives to ensure that every athlete has the opportunity to succeed academically and obtain a degree. Sports programs are a vital function of the University at large.The Assistant Athletic Trainer reports to the Director of Sports Medicine / Head Athletic Trainer and Senior Associate Athletic Director and is responsible for assisting in the direction of all aspects of the athletic training Program. This position exists to coordinate the prevention, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries Sustained by student-athletes in all 17 varsity sport programs.

Job Duties:

80% Prevent, provide acute treatment and rehabilitation for athletic injuries in student-athletes.

Major duties include:

• Serving as the primary athletic trainer for assigned sports including travel with teams
• Student-athlete education
• Assist with inventory, budget, purchasing, and other athletic training administrative functions

20% Educate and supervise athletic training students including competency sign-offs. Cooperate with the Athletic Training Education Program administrative

 

This position would require a high degree of independent thought and critical thinking during potentiallylife threatening situations. The successful candidate must be able to foresee possible situations that could be dangerous in athletic competition or practice, such as lightning or heat illness that would put a student-athleteat risk. This person must be able to develop a logical and safe progressive rehabilitation program and be ableto determine when it is safe to return a student-athlete back to participation, while communicating with theteam physicians, administrators, athletic trainers, coaches and student-athletes. The Assistant Athletic Trainer must also be able to supervise and evaluate student athletic trainers while they are performing their athletictraining competency skills. At times, the position would demand a high degree of problem solving and multi- tasking ability. Getting athletes, physicians, parents, coaches, and athletic staff working together can becomplex because of one’s different goals. Effective communication skills are essential in developing andmaintaining professional working relationships. Effective documentation skills are essential for maintainingappropriate records of student-athletes’ injuries, the treatments and progressions.

This position will provide a positive impact for athletic coverage and treatment of student-athletes. Student-athletes will receive the opportunity for appropriate care and treatment of athletic injuries. And a possible reduction of injuries due to the increased attention to student-athletes and their actvities. • Athletic administrators and support staff: regular all-staff meetings, as needed interaction
• Director of Sports Medicine / Head Athletic Trainer: daily communications about athletes, schedules
• Staff athletic trainers: daily communications about operations, weekly staff meetings
• Head coaches: daily communication in-season; regular communication out of season
• Student Athletic Trainers: daily communications during semesters about injuries, tx plans, schedules
• Student-Athletes: daily when injured, regularly during seasons for injury assessments, plans

Outside the University: (Identify with whom you typically communicate outside the University. If anyone, e.g., the public, vendors or suppliers, government officials, etc. Describe what you normally communicate about and how often, e.g., daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, etc.)

• Vendors/suppliers/partners: inventory and supplies, as needed
• Team physicians: weekly on-site interaction
• Athletic trainers, coaches, physicians for opposing teams at UNC and when traveling to away sites
• Professional scouts
• Allied health care professionals: as needed
  

Minimum Qualifications:

• A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or equivalent certified athletic training experience.
• Entry level athletic training position. Experience at the Division I collegiate level preferred.
• BOC Certification required; Colorado athletic training license or eligibility for license required; first-aid, CPR and AED certified
• Basic computer skills required (Microsoft Office Windows), communication, problem solving, management, supervisory and organizational skills, ability to work well under pressure; knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required.
• Recommended - approved clinical instructor experience
