Key Responsibilities

70% COACHING

Scouts future opponents by film, watching games, and/or telephone reports. Retrieves video tapes of future opponents. Develops scouting reports on future opponents. Provides consultation and expert advice to head coach and team members. Prepares, plans, conducts, and evaluates practice sessions, as directed. Teaches individuals and groups of players specific tasks and skills before, during and after practice, during season and off-season. Teaches all aspects of the game of softball as requested but will focus on infield/hitting. Teaches progressions and drills during daily practice time. Effectively recommends direction for all in-game infield/pitching and strategic decisions. Is available to coaches and players before, during and after practices, games, and events. Travel may be required to complete some or all of the position duties including driving to contacts’ locations, etc.

20% RECRUITMENT

Negotiates scholarship offers to prospects. Coordinates and oversees the recruitment of student-athletes. Prepares and distributes recruiting information. Attends off-campus games for the purpose of evaluation and contact, which requires the person in this role to drive and to maintain a valid driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Coordinates mailing of recruitment materials to prospective student-athletes; maintains computerized “master” recruit list. Makes phone contact with prospective student-athletes when appropriate. Plans campus visits with prospective student-athletes and their parents. Interacts with persons under18 years of age in a one-on-one setting.

10% PUBLIC APPEARANCES / OTHER

Represents the Athletic Department at various public events as directed by the Head Coach and/or the Administration.

What You Will Need

• Bachelor’s degree in a field of choice AND 1 year of collegiate assistant or volunteer coach experience at the NCAA Division I Level OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and athletic experience.
• Playing experience in college.
• Experience coaching infield/hitting positions
• Experience and understanding of NCAA Rules and Regulations.
• A working knowledge of NCAA Division 1 Rules and Regulation
• Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate in a manner that shows respect and inclusivity for student athletes, student workers and colleagues.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
