About this position

The Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of individual and group strength and conditioning training programs for student-athletes participating in the intercollegiate athletics program under the supervision of the Director of Strength & Conditioning.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Development

• Assist the Director of Strength and Conditioning with continuous improvement and growth of the Emory & Henry Strength & Conditioning program and management of the Gibson Fitness Center and its users.

• Enable student-athletes to perform to their physical potential in their sport through the development and management of both individual and group athletic performance training programs which includes strength, flexibility/mobility, speed, power, plyometric and other related training modalities.

• Evaluate current physical conditioning and utilize knowledge of various sports and associated exercises to develop and tailor strength and conditioning programs for specific student-athlete needs.

• Demonstrate proper performance of exercises and correct mistakes.

Administrative

• Must maintain up-to-date records of all programming, testing, and assessments for all assigned teams and athletes.

• Assist in the maintenance, integrity, daily upkeep, and record keeping of all equipment within the Fitness Center.

• Assist with fundraising programs/events.

• Attend and participate in weekly educational and professional development meetings.

• Assist with on-campus recruiting activities for prospective student-athletes as directed by the supervisor.

Assessment & Prevention

• Manages training programs and athlete development by monitoring progress and provides ongoing assessments of development.

• Reduce the likelihood of sports-related injuries or the aggravation of such injuries during practice sessions and scheduled games by being knowledgeable of the injuries sustained in the sport and keeping up to date on the latest research pertaining to injury reduction techniques.

• Illustrate and teach proper injury prevention methods, directing appropriate pre/post-training and pre/post-game (where applicable) preparations and warm ups.

• Work in coordination with qualified sports medicine personnel or athletic training personnel to develop appropriate return to competition training programs for injured athletes.

• Meet regularly with the coaching staff of assigned teams to discuss strength and conditioning training plans and any practice, personnel, or competition updates.

Compliance

• Abides by and complies with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), South Atlantic Conference, and Emory & Henry College rules, academic standards, requirements, and policies.

• Upholds and honors all guidelines and policies of the Emory & Henry Athletics department.

• Adheres to the best practices and standards set forth by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

About our ideal candidate

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree required, preferably with an emphasis in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or Physical Education. Master’s degree in a related field preferred.

• Minimum 1 year strength and conditioning coaching experience, preferably in collegiate athletics. Experience as a collegiate athlete is preferred.

Certification:

• Must possess a current certification as a National Strength and Conditioning Association Certified Strength (NSCA) and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and/or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coach Association (CSCCA) Strength and Conditioning Coach Certification (SCCC), and maintain continuing education requirements.

• Current CPR/First Aid certifications required and must be maintained throughout the course of employment in this position.

Skills:

• Ability to coach, teach, train, and mentor student-athletes while demonstrating proper knowledge and understanding of the stages of athletic development and performance enhancement.

• Encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

• Must demonstrate professional conduct in all aspects relating to this position as well as serving as a supportive team player within the Emory & Henry Athletics Department.

• Working knowledge of various computer systems and programs.

• Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
