SECTION II – THE SEAT

The Associate Athletic Director & Director of Sports Medicine at Colorado Mesa University, in coordination with Community Hospital, is responsible for overseeing and managing fourteen sports medicine staff members, budgets, and daily operations of both NCAA and Club Sports and sports medicine programs. This position will ensure high-quality healthcare services for student-athletes by fostering collaboration among sports medicine personnel, team physicians, Community Hospital administrative staff, Registered Dieticians and Nutritionists, and Physical Therapists.

Additionally, the Director will actively contribute to the daily responsibilities as an Athletic Trainer, including injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. 

 ** OVERVIEW AND ROLE SCOPE OF TEAM AND/OR TASKS**

Leadership & Administration
• Supervision & Management: In coordination with Community Hospital, direct, mentor, and evaluate fourteen members of the sports medicine staff, including athletic trainers, and interns.
• Budget Oversight: Develop and manage the sports medicine budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources for equipment, supplies, and medical services.
• Daily Operations: Oversee the coordination and execution of sports medicine services for all NCAA and Club Sports teams.
• Collaboration: Work closely with the Community Hospital administrative staff, team physicians, Registered Dieticians, and Physical Therapists to ensure seamless communication and a high standard of care for student-athletes.
• Compliance & Policy Implementation: Ensure that all sports medicine services adhere to NCAA, institutional, and medical best practices.
• Strategic Planning: Set future goals, facilitate improvement within the staff and the clinic, influence and promote and positive, supportive, and winning culture

Athletic Training Duties
• Injury Prevention:
• Develop and implement evidence-based strategies to minimize the risk of sports-related injuries.
• Conduct pre-participation screenings and biomechanical assessments.
• Educate student-athletes and coaching staff on injury prevention techniques, activity modifications, proper nutrition/hydration, and warm-up/recovery methods.
• Injury Assessment & Treatment:
• Perform evaluations and provide immediate care for acute and chronic injuries.
• Develop and execute treatment plans, utilizing appropriate modalities and rehabilitation techniques.
• Coordinate referrals to team physicians and other medical specialists as necessary.
• Rehabilitation & Return-to-Play Protocols:
• Design and oversee rehabilitation programs tailored to each athlete's needs.
• Collaborate with Physical Therapists to ensure comprehensive recovery plans.
• Monitor athlete progress and communicate return-to-play timelines with coaches and medical staff.
• Medical Documentation & Compliance:
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic medical records for all student-athletes.
• Ensure compliance with HIPAA, NCAA, and institutional policies regarding athlete health information.
• Submit injury and treatment reports as required.
• Game & Practice Coverage:
• Coordinate coverage for practices, home and away competitions, and special athletic events.
• Provide on-site emergency medical care and oversee post-injury care protocols.

CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS
To be successful in this position, candidates will need the following skills and abilities:
• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
• Knowledge of current best practices in athletic training and sports medicine.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE FOR RIGHT FIT
•  Must be a CMU employee to apply.
• Education: Master’s degree in athletic training, Sports Medicine, or related field preferred.
• Certification: Must be BOC Certified and hold or be eligible for Colorado state licensure.
• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in collegiate athletic training, with at least 2 years in a leadership role preferred.
