Job Description:

The Department of Athletics and Recreation is home to numerous staff members dedicated to providing students with meaningful experiences both on and off the fields.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

• Lead the Department of Athletics and Recreation, providing strategic direction for 19 NCAA Division III teams within the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC).
• Manage all administrative, operational, and business functions of the department, ensuring alignment with university priorities and compliance with Federal, State, SUNY, and NCAA regulations, including Title IX requirements.
• Hire, supervise, evaluate, and mentor department personnel, fostering professional growth and alignment with the university's mission.
• Develop and oversee the departmental budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and adherence to applicable regulations.
• Collaborate with the Fredonia College Foundation to develop and implement a strategic fundraising plan that supports the department's short- and long-term goals, including alumni engagement and external funding opportunities.
• Partner with institutional and community stakeholders to promote academic success, retention, and holistic student well-being.
• Oversee the implementation of the 2024-2028 Departmental Strategic Plan, ensuring alignment with the mission, vision, values, and goals of the department.
• Foster a culture that emphasizes well-being, diversity and gender equity, sportsmanship, and excellence among student-athletes and staff.
• Monitor and assess progress on strategic objectives, including wellness, academic and athletic excellence, stakeholder engagement, tradition building, and financial stewardship.
• Facilitate initiatives supporting alcohol and drug prevention, sexual violence prevention, and bystander intervention programs.
• Oversee facility operations and maintenance for athletic and recreational spaces.
• Enhance community engagement by fostering relationships with local and regional partners to support institutional goals.
• Ensure compliance with all university policies and maintain high standards of integrity and professionalism.

 

Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Master's Degree from an accredited higher education institution.
• At least five years of progressive experience in NCAA or professional athletics administration, including budget management, staff supervision, and facility management.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including students, staff, alumni, and community stakeholders.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• In-depth knowledge of NCAA rules and compliance procedures, with an understanding of Division III student-athlete philosophy.
• Proven track record in external fundraising, marketing, and promotions.
• Demonstrated experience establishing positive relationships with local communities and alumni.
• Strong leadership skills and a record of selecting and mentoring successful coaches and staff.
• Experience working collaboratively with institutional departments, including Admissions, Residence Life, and Facilities Management.
• Familiarity with NCAA compliance software and analytics tools.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, UUP represented position (SL5, Appendix B) beginning 6/1/2025. 

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. SUNY Fredonia conducts background screenings on applicants.

This title is in the unclassified service and in the SUNY Professional Services Negotiating Unit. This title is in Appendix B of Article XI of the SUNY Policies of the Board of Trustees and, as a consequence, incumbents serving in this title are not eligible for permanent appointment (tenure) but instead receive renewable term appointments in accordance with the SUNY Policies of the Board of Trustees unless appointed within the "Policies" definition of a temporary appointment.
