About Río Hondo College

Under the general supervision of an administrator or manager, plans, coordinates, and implements comprehensive sports medicine programs for the care, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of physical injuries.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
• District policies and procedures related to the area of assignment.
Principles and practices of supporting adverse, equitable, inclusive, socially just, anti-racist, and accessible academic work environment.
• Measures related to the prevention and minimization of athletic injuries.
• Early recognition, evaluation, and care of athletic injuries, including accurate assessment of the types and severity of injuries.
• Modern foundations, principles, techniques, and practices of athletic and sports trauma, evaluation, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation.
• Principles and theories of biology, anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, and biomechanics.
• Equipment used in t the prevention, evaluation, and therapeutic and rehabilitative care of athletic injuries and illnesses.
• Athletic equipment used in training and competitive sports.
• Principles and practices of taping and bracing for the prevention of injuries.
• Rehabilitation and reconditioning of athletic injuries to minimize the risk of re-injury.
• Injury referral methods to appropriate medical professionals.
• Healthcare administration, including medical record keeping, documentation, and reporting of injuries, writing of policies and procedures, and budgeting.
• Health conditions and illnesses related to athletic participation and sports.
• Basic first aid and CPR and operation and use of an AED.
• California Education Code and Title V as it relates to the area of assignment.
• Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
• Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the area of assignment.
• Record keeping, filing, file sharing, and filing systems methods and techniques.
• English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
• Techniques for providing a high level of medical service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, students, and District staff, including individuals of various ages, disabilities, various socio-economic and ethnic groups.

ABILITY TO:

Apply the principles of taping and bracing for prevention of injuries.
• Plan, coordinate, and implement a comprehensive athletic training and sports medicine program.
• Evaluate and assess the condition and progress of student athletes in therapeutic, rehabilitative, and conditioning programs and modify athletic programs to meet individual needs.
• Effectively operate and supervise the use of a variety of exercise and conditioning equipment such as free weights, nautilus, and universal machines, ergometers, and treadmills.
• Effectively administer therapeutics and first aid to injured student athletes.
• Act decisively and prudently in emergency and life-threatening situations.
• Establish, maintain, and organize medical insurance, treatment, and injuring records and reports.
• Perform basic first aid and CPR and utilize an AED.
• Train and direct student interns and student assistants.
• Interpret, apply, and explain applicable District policies, rules, and regulations related to areas of responsibility.
• Establish and maintain filing, record keeping, and tracking systems.
• Plan, organize, and prioritize workload to meet critical time deadlines.
• Operate various office machines (including personal computers and copiers) and the use of software, such as, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and District Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems.
• Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.
• Understand scope of authority in making independent decisions.
• Review situations accurately and determine appropriate course of action using judgment according to established policies and procedures.
• Exercise tact and diplomacy in dealing with sensitive and complex issues and situations.
• Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
• Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver license.
• Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid National Athletic Trainers Association Certification (BOC-ATC).
• Possession of, and ability to maintain, a valid Professional Rescuer CPR/AED certification.
• May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must possess mobility to work in an athletic training facility and in the field and use standard office and medical, therapeutic, and physical therapy apparatus and equipment, including a computer; to operate a motor vehicle and to visit various District and event sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
While performing the duties of this job, employees must possess mobility to work in an athletic training facility and in the field; use standard office, medical, therapeutic, and physical therapy apparatus and equipment including a computer; operate a motor vehicle to visit various District and athletic or special event sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
Employees in this class must possess the mobility, physical strength, and stamina to respond to emergency situations, provide injury and illness care, and use all medical, therapeutic, and physical therapy apparatus and equipment; finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, as well as, to set up and manipulate modalities, tape, and apply splints and to operate the equipment mentioned above.
Incumbents in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to provide medical care; push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 75 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. Employees in this class work in a typical office as well as outdoor environments and are occasionally exposed to loud noise levels, cold and/or hot temperatures, blood borne pathogens, chemicals, dust, fumes, and allergens. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR are required to wear appropriate attire. Employees may interact with staff, students, and/or the public in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.
