Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Development, the Chief Development Officer (Athletics) will work in partnership with the Director of Athletics and assume principal responsibility for the coordinated development and alumni engagement efforts.

RESPONSIBILITIES  

Fundraising (60%)

• Actively manage a portfolio of major and principal gift prospects and donors.
• Ensure continuous progress in moving assigned donors through donor cycle (e.g., qualify, engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward). Document all quality contacts and moves management strategies using the prospect tracking system (Advance).
• Craft and present proposals for major/principal gift solicitations and prepare other fundraising materials to be used to maximize philanthropy in support of strategic and campaign priorities.
• Create and update strategic plans for donors you plan on soliciting. Participate in relationship management teams and contribute to strategic plans associated with key donors.
• Collaborate with central advancement such as planned giving, principal gifts, corporate and foundation relations on major gift proposals.
• Provide excellent briefing, follow-up, and other support materials that include prospect strategy, meeting objectives, and next steps for strategic partners.
• Maintain a high degree of confidentiality and adhere to the policies and procedures for accepting, recording, and acknowledging gifts.
• UMAF is building and growing, and this position will support those efforts with other duties and projects as assigned from time to time.

Development Leadership (30%)

• Manages and provides leadership for a team of development officers and development support staff.
• In partnership with the Director of Athletics, plan, implement, and execute the athletics department campaign goals that complement the University’s comprehensive campaign objectives.
• Creates annual performance goals and meets with direct reports on a regular basis to ensure progress towards goals.
• Creates a collegial, team-building work environment, motivating the development staff, and cultivating productive, collaborative relationships with all constituent groups.
• Creates and implements programs to build stronger relationships with external and internal constituencies, including alumni, parents, business leaders, faculty and staff through careful cultivation and stewardship activities.
• Foster an inclusive team environment where all employees feel valued, their ideas welcomed, and their contributions affirmed.
• Provides strategic direction on annual giving and stewardship activities.

QUALIFICATIONS  

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited university.
• Minimum 8 years of prior experience with face-to-face fundraising in higher education or other non-profit organization OR equivalent experience in a complex organization such as sales, business development, or client/account management.
• Willingness to travel 50% of time, including overnight and occasional weekends.
• Ability to engage and effectively communicate with diverse audiences, including prospects, donors, executives, volunteer stakeholders, etc.
• A history of recruiting and developing outstanding talent with a keen understanding of the role of diversity in achieving excellence.
• Ability to problem solve, adapt to change, and successfully manage multiple projects from start to finish.
• Champions a diverse culture where opinions are welcomed and valued. Demonstrated ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment. 
• Must have a valid driver's license, the ability to obtain a driver's license, or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

BENEFITS

• 20 vacation days, 12 holidays, 12 sick days, 5 personal days, and 2 office closure days.

• 16 weeks of paid parental leave to use within 1 year of childbirth. An additional 6 weeks available for the birthing parent. Part-time work for full-time pay for the first 4 weeks post parental leave.

Proposed Annual Salary Range
$165,000 - $175,000
