Job Summary/Basic Function

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics welcomes applications for a full-time tenure-track Director of Athletics. The Director of Athletics is a member of the University faculty on a 12-month contract and assumes responsibility for the organization and administration of the Division II intercollegiate athletics’ program including, but not limited to, program, fiscal, facility and personnel management. The Director must maintain a close working relationship with the Department of Wellness and Sports Sciences, the Director of Facilities, Director of Admissions, Director of Financial Aid, Registrar’s Office, Advancement Office and other appropriate offices. S/he is responsible for/oversees the meeting of all NCAA compliance requirements and Equal Opportunity in Sports matters. In addition in order to facilitate programs and policies, the Director serves as the advisor to the Student Athletic Advisory Committee and is a member of the Faculty Student Athletic Committee and serves on other committees as appropriate. The Director is a member of the Academic Affairs staff and reports to the Provost/Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Working in a collective bargaining environment; it is the responsibility of the Director to administer the athletic program in keeping with the University’s philosophy of athletics, and in keeping with the rules and regulations of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The Director of Athletics assignment may include day, evening and/or weekend hours. The Director of Athletics has overall responsibility is all matters concerning scheduling, budgeting, transportation, and eligibility of student athletes Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications as well as aligned with the details contained in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Millersville University Promotion Statement. Minimum qualifications required to be considered for appointment at the rank of Associate include having an earned doctorate and a minimum of five years of full-time teaching experience (or its equivalent) and scholarship commensurate with this rank. Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must have earned at least a master’s degree from an accredited institution and have demonstrated evidence of: at least five years professional experience at a senior level in college athletic administration. an understanding of NCAA rules and regulations. participation in successful fundraising. Strong organizational, writing, public relations and communication skills. A strong passion and commitment to academic excellence and graduation of student-athletes. Commitment to equity, minority opportunities, and respect for diversity in the workplace. Successful cultivation of internal and external constituents. Ability to: be proactive in dealing with athletic and academic issues. maintain/assure institutional compliance with regulations and standards of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Successful leadership and strategic direction in enhancing the intercollegiate athletic program. Effective supervision, mentoring, development and retention of staff members. Successful interview that includes a public presentation focusing on the candidate’s academic and athletic philosophy. Successful completion of three background checks.

Preferred Qualifications

An earned doctorate or ABD. Experience managing employees within a collective bargaining environment. Experience in a division II setting. Knowledge of division II NCAA rules and regulations. College coaching experience.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Athletics will be a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Department, which includes the coaching and professional staff (including athletic trainers) who support approximately 460 student-athletes on seven Men’s teams (Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Football, Soccer, Tennis and Wrestling) and twelve Women’s teams (Basketball, Cross Country, Field Hockey, Golf, Indoor Track & Field, Outdoor Track & Field, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, and Volleyball). The Director of Athletics at Millersville University will be an innovative and strategic leader who can articulate a clear vision, in collaboration with the Intercollegiate Athletics team, for a DII athletics program (within the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) that provides a quality student-athlete experience. The Director of Athletics will support student-athlete success, including athletic performance, academic performance, and preparation for personal and career success upon graduation. The Director of Athletics will ensure that the athletics program is committed and aligned with the University’s mission and creates a positive culture that promotes respect, integrity, equity (including Title IX issues), inclusion, and compliance. The Director of Athletics will possess strong interpersonal skills and demonstrate a collaborative management style to work with internal and external constituents in support of the mission and goals of the intercollegiate athletics department. The Director of Athletics will develop and execute a strategy for revenue generation (including fundraising) in support of student scholarships, athletics facility enhancements, and other departmental needs. Examples of detailed responsibilities are below: Personnel Manage the departments 45+ employees and over 40 undergraduate and graduate student workers. Supervise all coaches and staff including annual performance reviews and goal setting. Make recommendations for the selection, employment, retention, and dismissal of employees. Be available to assist coaches in program administration. Assume responsibility for the administration of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Coordinate the intercollegiate athletic related aspects of the work of the associate/assistant Directors of Athletics, Sports Information Staff, Athletic Trainers, Business Manager, Director of Athletics Advancement, and Equipment Managers. Fiscal Management Manage a multi-million dollar operational and scholarship budget. Manage all internal business operations including oversight of the athletics business manager. Determine department budget allocations in cooperation with coaches and staff. Prepare overall budget and request monies relevant to the department goals as accepted within the university goal structure. Work with Student Government Association on student fee allocations for intercollegiate athletics. Responsible to approve all expenditures and maintain appropriate records. Work closely with the Business Office for all purchasing and budgeting requirements. Scholarship Management Assume the responsibility for all movies in the scholarship accounts. Review and approve recommendations from head coaches for the distribution of athletic awards. Establish short- and long-term scholarship targets and fundraising responsibilities for the department and coaches. Ensure all proper NCAA and University procedures are being followed for the allocation of student-athlete scholarships. NCAA Compliance and Academics Responsible for the administration of all aspects of the athletics program to ensure compliance and adherence to the rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). Manage the Associate AD for compliance and academics. Responsible for all department policies and procedures meeting NCAA best practices. Work with appropriate departments on campus to ensure a robust compliance office such as Registrar, Financial Aid, and Admissions. Certify all student-athletes are meeting NCAA and University eligibility and academic standards. Facilities and Event Management Manage the Associate AD for facilities and event management. Coordinate all short term and long-strategic plans for the athletic facilities. Approve all conference and non-conference competitions. Ensure appropriate game coverage staffing for home competitions. Oversee the scheduling of practices and competitions. Arrange for ticket sellers, security, buildings and grounds, maintenance, and other appropriate offices at athletic contests. Hire officials for all home contests. Make all changes, cancellations, reschedules, etc. as weather and other circumstances dictate. Student Engagement Engage and be present for student-athletes on campus. Oversee an active Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Ensure student-athlete well-being is present in all decision making. Oversee appropriate leadership and educational opportunities for student-athletes. Fundraising and Alumni Engagement Manage the Director of Athletics Advancement Responsible for the management of the Athletics Black & Gold Club. Set the strategic direction for the departments short term and long-term fundraising goals. Responsible for a major gift portfolio under the guidance of the Advancement Division. Work with appropriate offices on the fundraising efforts to establish and maintain monies for athletic scholarships, programs, and facilities. Be present at University and Department donor and alumni engagement events. Establish new and strengthen existing relationships for the purpose of athletic fundraising. Reporting/Membership Responsibilities: Represent Millersville University at PSAC and NCAA meeting. Attend Academic Affairs and other department meetings as appropriate. Assure that all NCAA, PSAC and other reports, including the Equal Opportunity report, Institutional Self-Study report, Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act report are submitted accurately and on time with ample time for the administration to review the reports before submission. Seek opportunities to represent Millersville on conference and NCAA committees. Title IX ComplianceOversee University compliance with Title IX requirements for intercollegiate athletics.Other duties as assigned.PERFORMANCE REVIEW / EVALUATIONS:Please see the CBA, Article 12, Performance Review and Evaluation of Faculty (pp. 27-39).As a member of the Faculty and the Association of Pennsylvania State College & University Faculties, the Athletic Director will be evaluated as described in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and relevant local agreements. DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:Millersville University Athletics has been a source of pride for the campus and entertainment for the community for more than 120 years. Millersville’s 19 teams and more than 450 student-athletes, compete at the NCAA Division II level. Millersville is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Working Conditions/Physical Effort – (Essential Functions) Work is normally performed in a typical interior/classroom environment. Teach courses face-to-face at the higher education level using lectures, demonstrations, class discussion, using online tools and/or equipment and/or other appropriate tools appropriate modes of education delivery. Speak in a clear voice and hear spoken words. Read and write the written word and higher-level statistics/mathematics. Manage classroom activities. Record and calculate grades, prepare course outline and syllabus, develop course and lesson plans, engage in the selection of appropriate textbooks and other teaching aids necessary to the delivery of instruction. Use computer for email, obtain information on websites, prepare class documents, grade papers, submit final grades online and other duties related to teaching and advising students and serving the department, college, university and community. No or very limited exposure to physical risks. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse.
