Director of Sports Medicine

Job Summary

The Director of Sports Medicine is responsible for the development, planning, strategic direction and overall accountability for the sports medicine department within Millsaps College’s athletic department.  The Director maintains direct oversight of staff members while creating a positive and dynamic team to interface/communicate with coaches and student-athletes. This position reports to the Director of Athletics.

This is a 12-month salaried-exempt position with full benefits. Work hours may include weekdays, weekends, and evenings.

Job Duties

• Administers and oversees the care, prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries to all student-athletes.
• Manages and supervises sports medicine staff.
• Organizes and maintains all medical records in accordance with federal and state regulations.
• Develops and maintains emergency action plans for all permanent and temporary practice and competition venues in accordance with university risk management guidelines and state regulations.
• Develops and maintains all department guidelines, policy and procedure in accordance with national/international best practices and consensus statements.
• Develops and maintains all service contract with medical consultants.
• Manages the budget for the sports medicine department including preparing clear and accurate reports regarding travel authorities, expenditure reconciliations, visa reconciliations, inventory lists and requested accounting.
• Maintains student-athlete insurance information.
• Maintains good communication with the insurance providers and manages all paperwork required for claims.

• Develops and maintains all department guidelines, policy and procedure in accordance with national/international best practices and consensus statements.
• Develops and maintains all service contract with medical consultants.
• Manages the budget for the sports medicine department including preparing clear and accurate reports regarding travel authorities, expenditure reconciliations, visa reconciliations, inventory lists and requested accounting.
• Maintains student-athlete insurance information.
• Maintains good communication with the insurance providers and manages all paperwork required for claims.
• Manages the Athletic Training Facility including overseeing equipment purchases and use, supplies, and vendors to maintain optimal health, safety and welfare of all constituents.
• Complies with all federal, state, NCAA and college policies and oversees campus wide compliance related to sports medicine.
• Plans and coordinates physical examinations and screenings.
• Communicates with physicians and coaching staff regarding the injury status of athletes. Makes appropriate physician’s referrals and appointments.
• Organizes and administers drug testing per department policy.
• Assists the institution in hosting athletic events.
• Helps monitor weather conditions and dangerous environments (humidity/lightning).
• Adheres to Conference guidelines, including visiting team accommodations and services.
• Ensures the Athletic Department staff maintains First-Aid, CPR and AED certification.
• Responsible for implementation and rehearsal of health and safety best practices.
• Assigns Athletic Health Care Administrator, with the approval of the Athletic Director, in accordance with NCAA guidelines.
• Additional duties as assigned by the Athletic Director

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree from a CAATE accredited institution of higher education (masters preferred)
• 5-7 years of experience in Collegiate Athletics
• 2 years of experience in insurance coordination
• BOC Certification
• Mississippi Athletic Trainer License (or eligible to obtain license)
• Active CPR/First Aid Certification
• Previous Experience at a CAATE- Accredited Athletic Training Program
• Understanding of the NCAA regulations and guidelines, and experience ensuring compliance
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work well with others from a broad range of positions, departments and cultural backgrounds
• Able to work in team environments and individually
• Detail-oriented, highly organized, creative problem-solver who takes initiative
• Ability to quickly learn new technologies and adapt to varying technological environments

- Ability to follow directions and complete tasks accurately as well as accept supervisory input and constructive criticism

Physical & Availability Requirements

• Able to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds with assistance
• Regular and repetitive stooping, bending, lifting and reaching are required
• Must have manual dexterity to position patients and conduct physical examinations and assist patients as needed, helping them on and off the exam table and to demonstrate proper form and technique, participating in team practices and other repetitive tasks
• Must have a valid state-issued driver’s license

- Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
