Position Summary

The Sports Communication Graduate Assistant at Upper Iowa University reports directly to the Assistant Athletics Director for Sports Communication and is responsible for assisting in the planning and executing of all aspects and facets of a successful sports communication office at the NCAA Division II level. This position involves writing press releases, managing social media platforms, coordinating media coverage, maintaining the Upper Iowa Athletics website (UIUPeacocks.com), taking statistics during home events and other duties as assigned. The GA will work to maintain a strong public presence for the university’s 16 athletic programs while ensuring that all content aligns with the university's branding and communication strategies. The ideal candidate will have a passion for sports, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a strong desire to learn and contribute to the athletic department's success. The graduate assistant will be the primary contact for several sports programs at UIU and the secondary contact for the remaining ones. The graduate assistant will ensure compliance with all Department, University, NCAA, and GLVC policies, procedures, and regulations.

 

Position Responsibilities

• Aggressively publicizing and promoting Upper Iowa University and its athletics department through all available means and handling all duties for sports as assigned.
• Writing, editing, and layout of weekly press releases, game notes and game day programs for assigned sports.
• Updating the official athletic department website.
• Promoting student-athletes, coaches, and programs for individual, team, and institutional awards, honors, and postseason play.
• Communication with the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) personnel.
• Maintaining and updating record books.
• Record statistics at home events.

 

Required Qualifications 

• Must be admitted into a graduate program at Upper Iowa University and maintain a 3.0 Grade Point Average.
• Hold a bachelor’s degree; preferably in sports management, communication, journalism, public relations, English or related field.
• Applicant should have at least two years of experience in athletic communications, sports information, or media relations.
• Ability to create social media content, engage with the audience, and promote athletic programs or events.
• Strong writing and editing skills for press releases, game recaps, social media posts, and feature stories. Often requires familiarity with the Associated Press (AP) style.
• Must have an understanding of NCAA rules and regulations.

 

Preferred Qualifications

• An understanding of sports statistics and the ability to interpret and report on sports statistics, experience with NCAA Live Stat programs .
• Possess a working knowledge of social media.
• Proficiency with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop or Canva.
• Familiarity with website management and updating content for athletic department websites.
• Experience conducting interviews with athletes or coaches and assisting with press conferences or media events.
• Ability to take ownership of projects and work independently, while also being an effective collaborator within a team.

 

Other

• 10-month renewable contract
• Monthly stipend ($1,000)
• Includes coverage of fees for master's degree
