Position Summary

The head dance coach is responsible for all phases of running a high performing and life impacting dance program. Responsibilities include; recruiting, planning practices, choreography, fundraising, facility scheduling, staff supervision, budgeting, and other administrative responsibilities necessary for a successful and life impacting dance program. Additionally, the coach will be expected to contribute to student mentoring, staff retreats, and university committees. The coach will work cooperatively across the Whitworth community to advance the mission of the University.

Core Responsibilities

Head Coaching | 40%

• Plan, organize and execute a dynamic training program, including choreography, in order to develop and prepare dancers to maximize their potential and pursue excellence in performance.
• Foster the academic achievement and physical well-being of dancers.
• Mentor and develop students both on and off the dance floor.
• Hire, supervise and evaluate assistant coaches, if applicable.
• Coordinate with Athletics staff regarding facility usage and performance scheduling.
• Perform other duties commensurate with the responsibilities of a college head coach

Recruit qualified dancers to Whitworth University | 20% - Connect with regional dance teams and coaches to develop of recruiting network. - Attend dance competitions in order to identify potential dancers. - Actively promote the team through social media. - Actively recruit a cohort of dancers to Whitworth, including on going communication, home visits, and campus visits.

Teach dance classes | 20% - Teach 8-12 credits annually of academic classes in accordance with all of the policies and requirements of Whitworth’s academic manual and expectations of instructors.

Budget and Fundraising | 10% - Manage and maintain team budget in line with University policies. - Order and maintain equipment and supplies for the dance team. - Plan and administer fundraising efforts on behalf of the dance team.

Other | 10% - Assist with special projects and initiatives. - Participate in department and university functions. - Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Core Competencies

• Master’s degree. A bachelor’s degree and exceptional coaching experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
• One to three years of demonstrated successful coaching experience. College or university-level experience preferred.
• A personal commitment to the Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning.
• Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, faculty, alumni, fans, parents, and students.
• A commitment to the educational mission of Whitworth University as a Christian liberal arts university.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Compliance with Whitworth’s Campus Vehicle Policy.

Core Competencies - Demonstrated commitment to the academic and athletic success of the student athlete. - Proven record of accomplishment in leading a highly successful softball program. - Extensive knowledge of dance. - Understanding of NCAA compliance rules. - Ability to recruit and retain quality dance student athletes. - Ability and willingness to work effectively in a team atmosphere in the Athletics Department. - Strong commitment to the University and the NCAA Division III philosophy.

Full-time (1.0 FTE) | 12 months | 40 hours per week
