POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of the Women's Wrestling Head Coach is to help organize and facilitate all aspects of the women's wrestling program in a professional manner that will translate into a successful and fulfilling experience for all student-athletes who are associated with the program. Other responsibilities include directing all aspects of a competitive NAIA wrestling program including compliance with NAIA and University rules and regulations; recruitment of qualified, gifted student-athletes; contest scheduling; budget management; fund-raising; and retention of student-athletes. A coach at SOU is expected to create an environment of respect, trust and commitment for his/her team.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree.
• Minimum of three years college coaching or playing experience.
• A well-constructed and demonstrated coaching philosophy that focuses on character development.
• Ability and willingness to travel long distances for competitions and recruitment; work nights and weekends.
• Experience with/ability to interact with a diverse population.

Preferred Requirements

• Master's Degree. Experience as a college coach coaching freestyle Technique.

Essential Functions

Duties - The following examples are typical work activities that are meant to illustrate the general range of work functions and are not meant to be all-inclusive or restrictive:

(60%) Organize and facilitate all facets of the women's wrestling program, including:

• Team practices, teaching wrestling skills and techniques at a level appropriate for collegiate competition. Must be proficient in freestyle technique utilized in women's collegiate wrestling.
• Create the Women's Wrestling match schedule a year in advance.
• Intentionally teach character skills to the student-athletes, and hold them accountable to a well-constructed and communicated set of principles and expectations.
• Establish regular office hours and meeting times with student-athletes.
• Arrange transportation, lodging, and meal accommodations for scheduled away contests.
• Work with game management and sports information personnel to facilitate logistics for teams, coaches, referees, volunteers, scorers and equipment at home duals and tournaments.

(15%) Recruiting

• Coordinate outreach and travel for yourself and assistant coaches to locate, recruit and retain highly skilled and academically motivated student-athletes that are a good fit for your program and SOU.

(10%) Academic oversight of student-athletes

• Establish team and individual goals for student-athletes that hold academic achievement and graduation as top program priorities.
• Ensure student-athletes in need of academic assistance are regularly attending study table sessions you coordinate as well as meetings with advisers and tutors.
• Ensure good communication (see Missed Class Policy) exists between your program, student-athletes and faculty in advance of missed class time due to travel.

(15%) Team Fund Raising

• Along with monitoring program budget levels, the head coach will establish and coordinate opportunities to bolster funding for the program through fundraising, camps and/or clinics.
• Additional Duties as assigned by the Athletic Department.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

• Excellent communication skills; demonstrated ability to effectively communicate information in a clear and understandable manner, both verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated customer service experience requiring a very high level of diplomacy and professionalism to effectively handle a broad range of sensitive interpersonal situations.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and consistently apply a wide variety of complex policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not always exist.
• Expressed ability to work with frequent changes in policies and procedures, under pressure of deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated ability to proactively assess work operations and anticipate potential problems; ability to develop and implement strategies for preventing/resolving problems.
• Great ability to effectively perform work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature that requires access to information. Must be able to exercise sound judgment and discretion, tact, and diplomacy.
• Takes initiative in independently planning, organizing, and performing work assignments within broadly defined parameters.
• Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of productivity and accuracy/attention to detail.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills with the demonstrated ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
• Willingness to and work effectively in a heavily bureaucratic environment which requires regular interaction with a number of levels within the organization and multiple outside agencies.
• Working knowledge or ability to quickly learn, university infrastructure, policies, and procedures.
• Demonstrated ability to provide training and direction to student assistants.
• Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
• Ability to adherence to the NAIA, Cascade and Frontier Conference, and
  Southern Oregon University rules and regulations pertaining to recruiting,
  eligibility and general operation of the team.

Physical Demands

• The nature of this work requires that the individual be able to lift at least
  50lbs overhead and to be able to bend and stoop. Must posses the physical ability to properly demonstrate necessary techniques associated with the sport.

Special Conditions

• Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
• Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
• Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background check.
• This position classification has been defined as exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
• The person holding this position is considered a mandatory reporter under the Oregon Revised Statutes and is required to comply with the requirements set forth by the Oregon Department of Human Services.
• Must be willing to travel and work additional hours during the season.
