Job Summary

The Head Spirit Squad Coach recruits, instructs, mentors, and monitors the young men and women in the UT Tyler Cheer, Mascot, and Dance programs. The head coach coordinates program activities, internal and external appearances, and competitions. The head coach is also responsible for promoting UT Tyler athletics, coordinating in-game special events, engaging the campus and community, and creating a game environment.

Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks

• Coordinate team practices, games, events, performances, travel, camps (NDA/UCA), and competitions. 
• Mentor team members to secure their academic success, community involvement, and personal development, including but not limited to meeting individually to discuss grades, health, academic progress, and volunteerism. 
• Coordinate recruitment, selection, and retention of team members, including semester tryouts and rolling open recruitment when necessary. 
• Engage and direct fundraising efforts for the Spirit Squad. 
• Maintain facilities and equipment used by Spirit Squad. 
• Collaborate with stake holders for the Mascot(s) as a scholarship student-athlete. 
• Coordinate game-day promotions/events during regular seasons; facilitate all other game-day activities as the point of contact. 
• Maintain regular communication with the coaching staff and department staff members in formulating the marketing plan for athletics department events. 
• Serve as the department’s direct liaison with student groups and on-campus offices, and the Dean of Students. 
• Develop a student marketing strategy to increase attendance at all home UT Tyler athletic events. 
• Communicate with student leadership groups and work to increase school spirit and student engagement at all athletic events. This might include tailgates, pregame gatherings, fan buses, dorm storms, food distribution, giveaways, etc.
• Represent Athletics at student events such as Orientation, Patriot Days, and other duties as requested by the Director of Athletics.  
• Identify new and emerging industry trends, research and implement new advertising and promotional opportunities. 
• Attend conferences and conventions when necessary. 
• Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Education/Experience

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or relevant certification. 
• Experience in Cheer/Dance at the collegiate level. 
• Experience working with game-day cheer and dance competitions.
• May accept a combination of education and experience.

 

Preferred Education/Experience

• Master’s degree preferred. 
• Previous experience working in a Department of Athletics. 
• Previous experience with promoting campus or student spirit. 
• Previous experience with promoting game-day experience.
• May accept a combination of education and experience.

 

Required Certifications / Licenses: 

• Must maintain certification in first aid/CPR/AED throughout the entire appointment.
• Current Texas Driver's License within two (2) months of employment.

Additional Information

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
