The Indiana University (IU) Southeast Department of Athletics provides intercollegiate athletic opportunities for students at the NAIA level and in the River States Conference. Through these opportunities students achieve educational and personal fulfillment, life skills, character development and campus pride. Job Summary

 

• Designs and implements 12-month strength and conditioning programs for each intercollegiate team to accomplish head coach goals using industry standards for development of programs and outcome assessment. 
• Schedules team weight room hours and supervises team use of the weight rooms per NAIA bylaws. 
• Ensures the safe operation of all equipment and spaces used. 
• Works with the sports medicine staff to take into consideration the unique needs of each student-athlete.
• Maintains records according to university and NAIA requirements. 
• Complies with all department, campus, conference and NAIA rules and regulations.
• Maintains a positive working relationship with student-athletes, coaches, staff, university community and the general public.
• Develops 12-month sports specific resistance programs for all athletics teams within the department. 
• Works with head coaches to develop these strength and conditioning plans based upon the goals for each coach and team. 
• Effectively instructs and motivates participants on safe and proper execution of lifts, drills, exercises, and/or movement patterns to enhance athletic skill, ability and capacity.
• Implements team specific strength and conditioning programs utilizing sound teaching principles. 
• Assesses student-athletes to determine strength, fitness levels and susceptibility toward injury. 
• Works with Sports Medicine to modify programs as needed for student-athletes as needed for rehabilitation. 
• Actively collaborates with sports medicine personnel to provide holistic care, including injury prevention and exercise modification strategies. 
• Plays an active role in the reconditioning of student-athletes returning to activity from injury. 
• Provides head coaches with analysis of biometric data and performance indicators to improve individual performance and team outcomes and for modifications to training, practice and competition plans.
• Maintains continuous communication with assigned head coaches to ensure that the training program outcomes support team objectives and priorities
• Provides all of the above training and assessments on campus facilities and off-site partner facilities.
• Works with teams to schedule meals for home and road contests. Works with teams on nutrition. 
• Collaborates with campus food provided to schedule those meals and makes recommendations to coaches and campus food provider on meals that would add value to the student athlete's performance and experience.
• Inputs and manages all student-athlete assessment data and progress tracking towards team and individual goals.
• Develops and implements strength and conditioning policies and procedures. 
• Works with community organizations to match teams with area initiatives that strengthen the relationship between IUS and the region.
• Assists students in directing them to the appropriate campus resources when needed.

Qualifications

 

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education. 

 

EDUCATION

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology/Exercise Science, Recreation or related field from an accredited institution.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

• Some experience in a strength and conditioning program and or training program.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required

• CPR with AED certified.

SKILLS

Required

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with diverse groups at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to use sound judgement and discretion in responding to issues and concerns and maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work independently and be flexible while performing a wide range of tasks concurrently and effectively.
• Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conferences, the NAIA as well as other associates and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
• Continuing expert understanding and education related to NCSA and CSCCA.
• Reduces the likelihood of sports-related injuries or the aggravation of such injuries during practice sessions and scheduled contests by being knowledgeable of the injuries sustained in the sport and proper prevention methods, directing appropriate pre-training session and pre-contest preparations and warmups, and working with qualified sports medicine personnel or athletic trainers during all training sessions and contests. 
• Understanding of mechanics and body movements associated with the sports that the individual will be working with.
• Working understanding of NAIA bylaws regarding countable activities. 
• Uses understanding of FERPA and privacy in managing student-athlete data. 

Preferred

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, email, and calendaring software.
• Knowledge of University policies, procedures and regulations applicable to the performance of this position.
• Ability to establish effective goal-oriented relationships with coaches, staff, student-athletes, and the sports medicine staff.
