POSITION SUMMARY:

The Duquesne Athletics Pep Band Director recruits and oversees all aspects of a single body of musicians that performs for home appearances of the Football, Men’s Basketball, and Women’s Basketball Teams as well as occasionally for Olympic sports. Additionally, the Director is expected to travel to away postseason basketball games. The Pep Band also performs at about 5-10 special events throughout the year including freshman orientation, homecoming, pregame postseason gatherings, etc. Throughout the year, there are various recruiting events that the Pep Band or Director is expected to have a presence at to grow the band (Open Houses, DUQ Days, FAST, Freshman Orientation, etc.) The Band Director reports to the Director, Marketing & Fan Engagement and works in partnership with the Athletics Marketing/Game Operations staff to provide an integrated event environment.

This role is considered a part-time position with an adjunct faculty role. The Pep Band Director must be available to teach a 3-hour class each semester that serves as rehearsal time leading up to the basketball season (90 hours over the course of the year). The hourly compensation over the course of the year is up to 500 hours (not inclusive of the class previously mentioned). Seasonal hourly expectations: Football season (4-5 home games, September – November), Basketball season (15-25 hours per week which vary based on the number of men’s and women’s basketball home games, 19 weeks November – March), and Spring/Summer (planning, recruiting, and preparing for the season, hours will vary but estimated at about 90-100 hours)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as an adjunct faculty member of the Music School: The Pep Band Director instructs a 1-credit hour class each semester, expectations of this role include developing a syllabus, instructing a 3-hour rehearsal class once per week prior to basketball season and as appropriate once the season commences, keep accurate attendance and submit grades at the conclusion of each semester, etc.
