Job Description:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: The Athletics Academic Success Advisor serves as an integral part of the athletic department and is key to contributing to the academic success of our student-athletes. This individual will provide academic counseling for student-athletes to include learning and academic needs assessments, as well as study and learning strategies to promote skill building for students enrolled in the program.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Coordinate and monitor all facets of a sustained academic support program for student-athletes that results in improved retention rates, academic success, and graduation rates for student-athletes.
Oversee and coordinate a student-athlete study hall program for first-year and academically-at-risk students.
Meet with students individually to monitor academic progress and provide counseling for academic issues.
Create and lead an educational programming series targeted towards helping student-athletes adjust to life as a collegiate student-athlete that is based on their current academic year and needs specific to that audience.
Hire, train, and supervise two (2) part-time study hall coordinators and ensure they are meeting the goals of the program and scheduled appropriately throughout the academic year.
Orient students to the Fitchburg State University advising system (LA&S and programmatic requirements); facilitate pre-advising for course selection each semester.
Provide tailored services necessary for students to achieve and maintain good academic standing.
Collaborate with advisees, faculty, and staff to monitor, analyze, and evaluate academic progress including monitoring midterm alerts and distributing that information to coaches.
Make referrals and coordinate services with other support and academic departments as needed.
Track progress towards degree completion and help student-athletes design and implement academic success strategies.
Provide semester based and annual reports to the Director of Athletics on the academic success of student-athletes.
Communicate and strategize regularly with all head coaches on the academic success needs of their athletic teams.
Collaborate with the Faculty Athletic Representative and assist with managing any faculty issues that arise.
Serve on institutional committees and participate in campus events.
Seek and attend opportunities for professional development.
Serve as a member of the athletic department leadership team and assist with other department initiatives and projects as needed.
Assume other appropriate responsibilities as assigned by the director.
Requirements:
REQUIREMENTS:
2-3 years of experience working in academic support services or related experience.
2-3 years of experience as a head or assistant coach at the college level and working with student-athletes.
Understanding of, and experience working with, mentor programs.
Experience working in an education setting, post-secondary preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills.
Some evening or weekend work may be required.
Experience working collaboratively with diverse groups.
Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check), Sexual Offender Registry Information (SORI); a background check satisfactory to the university.
Ability to perform the above duties with or without reasonable accommodations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in counseling, psychology, education, or related field preferred.
Additional Information:
This is a full-time, grant funded, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The annual salary range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000 commensurate with education and experience. The continuation of the position is contingent on grant funding.
