Working with student athletes to promote their academic success and orientation to University life. Assisting students to select a major through activities developed to help them identify their academic strengths and interests, study skills, time management, organizational skills, and methods for choosing balanced schedules factoring in the demands of classes, practice, competition and eligibility. Advising student athletes regarding general education and degree requirements and registering them for classes. Writing detailed reports to coaches, conduct and attend team meetings, compile semester grade/eligibility reports. Working collaboratively with the Athletics Department staff, Director of the Academic and Career Planning Center, Director of University Honors and Undergraduate Studies, the academic departments, the Registrar’s office, Admissions, and the Student Activities Center to provide student athletes with accurate information and guidance as they make decisions about course selections and programs of study. Monitoring NCAA eligibility degree progress requirements, mentor academic at risk student-athletes, assist with study table, recruiting, and other duties as assigned.
Conducting workshops and training sessions on campus to inform student athletes about NCAA eligibility requirements, and academic programs. Serving as an advisor during the summer registration program for incoming student athletes. Position also include teaching a first-year success course and other academic skills/orientation courses. Some evening and weekend work is required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree required. Knowledge of NCAA Division 1 academic eligibility degree progress criteria is essential. Excellent communication skills; and the ability to relate to and establish rapport with college students are critical to this role.
A Master’s degree in counseling, education or related field is preferred. Experience in academic counseling/advising position in Higher Education working with college students is preferred, preferably in an advising, counseling, or teaching capacity; Knowledge of retention issues and practices, and knowledge of USD academic requirements and registration processes desirable.
