Position Purpose: Supports the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach in designing and implementing effective strength and conditioning programs to enhance the physical performance and overall wellness of student-athletes, playing a critical role in promoting injury prevention, optimizing athletic performance, and fostering a culture of excellence in support of the mission and core values of Union College.
Union College sponsors 26 intercollegiate sports, 24 in Division III, with Ice Hockey competing at Division I.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Design and Implementation: Supports the Head Strength and Conditioning coach in developing comprehensive and individualized strength and conditioning programs tailored to the specific needs and goals of student-athletes across various sports.
Conducts thorough assessments of athletes' physical capabilities, strengths, weaknesses, and injury history to inform program design. Oversees the safe and proper execution of strength training exercises, conditioning drills, and injury prevention protocols. Monitors and tracks athletes' progress, making necessary adjustments to programs as needed for continuous improvement.
Education and Guidance: Educates student- athletes on proper exercise techniques, injury prevention strategies, and the importance of nutrition and rest for optimal performance. Provides ongoing guidance and support to athletes, encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyle choices to enhance their overall well-being. Serves as a mentor and role model to instill discipline, motivation, and sportsmanship in student-athletes. Fosters a positive and encouraging environment that promotes teamwork, accountability, and self-discipline.
Administrative: Maintains and organizes strength and conditioning facilities, ensuring all equipment is in excellent working condition and adheres to safety standards. Schedules and coordinates training sessions to accommodate student-athletes' practice and competition schedules. Keeps detailed records of athletes' training progress, injury history, and program modifications. Stays up-to-date with the latest advancements and research in strength and conditioning to continuously enhance coaching methods.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, sports science, and/or a combination of relevant education, training, certifications, and/or work experience.
Previous experience designing and implementing strength and conditioning programs for athletes, preferably at the collegiate level.
Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and exercise prescription principles.
CPR and First Aid certification required or ability to complete
Strong organizational, interpersonal, communication and computer skills needed.
Nationally recognized certification in strength and conditioning. NSCA-CSCS or CSCCa-SCCC certification is preferred
Understanding of NCAA rules and regulations
The ability to foster and enhance a thriving, culturally diverse, and inclusive learning community, while promoting a sense of belonging among students, alumni, faculty, and staff colleagues.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively instruct and motivate student-athletes.
Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, and potentially weekends to accommodate varying athletic schedules.
Compensation:
The hourly rate for this position is $15.50 an hour. Except for roles with a set rate of pay, the wage/salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
